1. Background

Tasmania’s commercial sea fishing sector plays a vital role in the state’s economy, providing fresh seafood to local communities and supporting employment across the supply chain. Sustainable management, healthy marine ecosystems, and responses to emerging challenges are essential for ensuring future seafood supply. Tasmania’s marine environment is shared with other users, including recreational and Indigenous fishers, as well as industries like aquaculture, marine parks, and offshore energy. The commercial fishing sector faces significant challenges, including rising operating costs, supply chain disruptions, competition from imported and farmed seafood, climate change impacts, interactions with protected species, restricted access to fishing grounds, and workforce shortages. To address these issues, a 10-year strategy is being developed to guide industry towards a resilient future in terms of environmental, economic and social viability, for the benefit of all Tasmanians.
