Surrey Research Insight, University of Surrey

You have been invited to complete the survey based on your role in academic publishing, either as an editor or publisher. The term 'organisation' is used in this survey to refer to a commercial publishing company, a learned society or a university press.

Please note that this survey covers academic monographs only.

Background
It is increasingly the case that open access to research outputs includes open access to electronic theses. A large number of UK universities now require PhD students to submit an electronic copy of their theses and to grant open access rights (though restrictions may be requested). The University of Surrey is no exception in this regard.

A number of concerns have since arisen, however, concerning the effect open access e-theses (OAETs) have on future publishing opportunities, and specifically whether or not OAETs are considered 'pre-published'. Though there have been a number of studies premised on survey's similar to this one, we are looking to gain an up-to-date understanding of current publishing trends and policies concerning the publication of material derived from OAETs. We intend to share our findings with other universities, in order to assist them in devising their own e-theses policies.
