Boston Pride and The History Project Team Up To Hang Stonewall 50 Banners

June 2019 is the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising in New York. Here in Boston, events will take place at various locations during and after Pride; visit the Boston Pride website in April for more information.

We want the world to know of the prominent role Greater Boston has played in the LGBTQ movement.

Boston was the movement's training ground. Many leaders of LGBTQ organizations around the nation and world began their activism in Boston. Gay Community News, the first LGBTQ newspaper with a national reach was founded in Boston. Without the communication it provided, there could be no movement. Before Harvey Milk was elected in San Francisco, Boston elected an out lesbian, Elaine Noble. Greater Boston’s response to the AIDS crisis has been a model around the world. And of course, equal marriage began here. This is just a sliver of what was accomplished.

Behind these milestones and many others, were hundreds of activists – like you – who worked on all sorts of issues and events. More people should know our history! This is where The Stonewall 50 Banner Project comes in.

In June 2019, large banners and posters will spring up in the Boston area on buildings where our history was made. They will contain a link to The History Project's website, which will explain and illustrate the history of those sites. We won’t be able to hang banners from every location where LGBTQ history was made (we were, and are, everywhere) but with your help we’d like to hang about a dozen from historic buildings.

Help us select banner sites by voting for your favorite locations.

*Please note that we cannot guarantee that a banner will hang from a site even if it has lots of votes. Approval is needed from the owners; we will do our best.*
