Sudden Service

Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital Members Only

Ever wonder how Girl Scouts are invited to places like the White House, or asked to attend congressional events? Sudden Service! This program, open to Girl Scouts of all levels, provides your girls with special opportunities to volunteer and represent Girl Scouts at high profile events.

Here's how it works: Girl Scouts are asked, often at the last minute, to perform duties such as: flag ceremonies, help at receptions, usher at special events or just to build an audience. The Girl Scout Council will send a request to Sudden Service troops via email, so troop leaders should be prepared to check their email often. Girl Scouts are then selected on a "first come, first served" basis. You will be notified if your troop or Girl Scout is selected for an opportunity.

Please note that some events request girls from a particular community or congressional district, a particular age or ethnic group, interested in a specific topic, or with a certain talent such as singing or playing an instrument. Some requests may be sent with only 24 hours notice.

Girl Scouts participating in Sudden Service must have a Girl Scout uniform. You are representing Girl Scouts and we ask for all girls to be cooperative and able to talk about their Girl Scout experience. Not all Sudden Service events are supervised by Council staff, so parents and/or troop leaders may be asked to chaperone their girls.

If this sounds like the right program for your troop, please complete the form below and submit by October 31, 2016 for the 2016-2017 Girl Scout year. Parents must have photo permission for their daughters to participate. Sudden Service events will count towards Council service hours.
