The Office of the Provost and the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching & Learning (CET&L) are pleased to announce the creation of two new groups in support of faculty engaged in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). These groups will bring together faculty from different disciplines for ongoing collaboration and dialogue as they explore questions related to teaching and learning. The groups will also provide peer support and accountability to help participants make progress on their individual SoTL agendas.

Applications will close on Tuesday January 3, 2017 with formal notifications of acceptance on or before Thursday January 5, 2017. You may choose to apply to one or both SoTL groups for the Spring 2017 semester.

SoTL Journal Club

Proposed by faculty member Juli Uhl (Biology), the SoTL Journal Club will support members of UC’s teaching community who want to deepen their understanding of current trends and topics in research on teaching and learning by reading and discussing articles with colleagues. The group will meet monthly during the Spring 2017 semester and is open to graduate students. The meeting schedule and articles to be read will be selected based on group availability and interest.  Coffee and snacks will be provided.

SoTL Writing Group (Online with 2 Face-to-Face Sessions during the Spring 2017 semester)

The SoTL Writing Group will provide a supportive community to keep members motivated and accountable as they work toward a scholarly publication on teaching and learning. The group’s structure draws on research demonstrating that writing productivity increases when faculty write regularly in small chunks and have a supportive community to whom they are accountable. SoTL Writing Group members will have two face-to-face meetings, a beginning of semester mini-retreat to meet one another and get set up for a productive semester (January 6th 9am-12pm) and an end of semester celebration (Date TBD). In addition, over the course of the semester, members will commit to daily writing (for example, half an hour a day) and logging their progress and barriers online for peer support and accountability. Applicants should already have a topic in mind and be ready to begin (or continue) writing.

NOTE: The first mini-retreat for the SoTL Writing Group will take place at CET&L on January 6th from 9 am-12pm. Coffee and snacks will be provided.

The application will take less than 10 minutes to complete.

If you have questions about either group, feel free to contact Beth Faller: beth.faller@uc.edu.
