Nominations are being sought for PPN representatives to take up seats on Sligo Local Community Safety Partnership (LCSP)

Summary
The commencement of the Sligo LCSP structure is a government initiative which brings together local Councillors, statutory services, business, education, the voluntary and community sector, community members and other areas of expertise to work together to identify and tackle community safety issues across County Sligo.

Representing the PPN and the wider Community & Voluntary sector in Sligo will give you a good insight into how Local Government works and satisfaction to know that you are helping your fellow volunteers. This is also an opportunity for you to work collaboratively with stakeholders towards a shared vision that will enhance the quality of life in Sligo.

Background
· In April 2025, new legislation called the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024 came into effect and section 114 dealing with Community Safety Partnerships commenced on 26th June 2025. As a part of this legislation, Joint Policing Committees have now been dissolved.
· The new Act hopes to ensure that community safety focus is about people being and feeling safe in their own communities. This will be achieved by requiring relevant State bodies to work in collaboration with local communities to prioritise and address issues in their own local areas. The new Partnership approach aims to encourage greater community participation and empowerment to foster greater feelings and experiences of safety in their localities.

Nominations are now being sought for Sligo PPN representatives to take up the following seats on Sligo LCSP

1) Seats from Residents Associations (minimum 4 no)

2) A number of representatives from across the broader PPN network from Community Reps including youth, new & minority communities, social inclusion/C&V sector and at ** below (minimum 3 no)

TO NOTE
1) When nominating for Residents Associations, please note that geographical spread across the MDs will be an essential criterion for selection. This means that if more RAs make nominations than seats available then nominations may go to a vote. The overall highest polling nominee will be automatically elected, followed by the highest polling nominee in each MD. The final seat will then be filled by the next highest polling candidate from either MD. If no nomination is received from the initial call within a specific MD the committee will undertake a second process to ensure geographical spread.

2) When nominating community representatives for the Safety Partnership, due regard should be given to the broader socio-economic context of Sligo LCSP area.

This includes consideration of factors such as levels of disadvantage, social exclusion, and the demographic composition of the community.

It is particularly important to try and ensure that certain groups within the community, who may be adversely affected by issues relating to community safety, are represented in local decision-making structures.

** These may include young people, new and minority communities, people of ethnic minority background, persons with disabilities, Age-Friendly groups, LGBTQI community, those experiencing social and economic disadvantage or other social inclusion communities
