The Shell Beach Road Bicycle & Pedestrian Path Project will extend the existing path from Terrace Avenue (Shell Beach Elementary) north to the Avila Beach Drive Roundabout before connecting with the Bob Jones Trail on Ontario Road. We are looking for input on the planning and design for this project.

1.The intersection of Ontario Rd. & Avila Beach Drive is wide, and vehicle speeds can make crossing at Ontario Rd. feel unsafe, especially for people walking or biking. Which of the following options would make crossing here feel safest for people walking or biking?

Roundabout. Imagine a small-scale version of the roundabout east of the intersection at Avila Beach Dr./Shell Beach Rd./U.S. 101. Roundabouts have vehicular crash reduction benefits.

Hybrid Beacon. The signal stays dark until a bicyclist or pedestrian presses the button to activate the signal. The signal then flashes yellow and turns red to stop traffic, allowing the bicyclist or pedestrian to cross safely.

Flashing Beacon. A flashing signal is activated by the bicyclist or pedestrian to stop oncoming vehicles, but does not fully stop traffic.

2.Transit Access. The new path will provide safe and convenient access to the Avila Beach Park and Ride lot and transit services from Shell Beach.
Would you be more likely to do any of the following once the path is constructed?

Take the trolley into Avila Beach for special events or other trips

Take an RTA bus into Downtown SLO, Pismo Outlet Mall, or shopping in Arroyo Grande

Meet at the park and ride lot for a carpool

Conventional Ladder Style Crossing

Raised Crosswalks (Slows traffic approaching the crossing)

Pedestrian Safety Islands (Reduce the amount of time you're exposed to traffic)
