About Austen Brantley
Austen is a self-taught figurative sculptor based in Detroit, Michigan. His work connects themes of heritage, identity, and realistic portrayals of Black lives. Learn more about Austen Brantley & see his work here.

Proposed Location
The 2017 Darbo-Worthington-Starkweather Neighborhood Plan called for the City to create a public art/gateway feature to build neighborhood pride.

Austen proposed a location for his sculpture on East Washington Avenue, north of the Starkweather Creek Bike Path. This location is visible from the adjacent path, the BRT stop, and vehicles traveling on E Washington. The location is subject to change.

Designs
In June 2023, Brantley visited Madison, met with community stakeholders, and taught a workshop at Madison College. During this visit, Brantley was inspired to create the three designs below. Design 01, Faith Moves Mountains, may blend stone and bronze. Design 02 may be bronze on a stone or concrete pedestal. Design 03 may be entirely bronze. These designs are not exact. Size, colors, characteristics, proportions may change as he works with real models to develop the final work.
