THE SHIELD:
The shield contains four symbolic emblems.
The star and wreath are symbolic of the then Republic of Texas to which European immigrants were attracted to during the great European migration period of the mid-19th century. This migration spurred the founding of the town that became Schertz, Texas.
Moving clockwise, the bison represents the wildness of the land and the sustenance provided the land’s Indian populations during the early years of settler arrival to the Cibolo (Indian word for buffalo) Valley.
The ship is a replica of the type of sailing ship that carried European settlers to the Republic of Texas between 1843 and 1860, the time frame of Schertz family arrivals.
The wagon wheel represents settler movement from Coastal Texas to South Central Texas aboard ox driven carts and also represents the wheels of crude farming equipment with which settlers converted the Cibolo Valley wilderness into a productive farming area.
