Additional Residential Units (ARUs)
Additional Residential Units (ARUs) are self-contained homes located within the same building, or on the same lot, as a detached house, semi-detached house or rowhouse. They can be located within the interior of the existing house (example: basement), in an existing garage, or by constructing a detached unit on the property or as an addition to an existing building.
Two (2) ARUs are permitted provided that the following criteria are met:
- a detached house, semi-detached house or rowhouse is permitted,
- lots are in the settlement area boundary (e.g. not on agricultural lands), and
- lots are served by municipal sewage works and municipal drinking water system
The ARU must meet applicable zoning by-law requirements (e.g., setbacks, and parking of one space per ARU).
