On Saturday, April 26 from 3:00 – 5:00 pm, the Gateways Festival Orchestra, in association with Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute, will offer several instrumental master classes in our Resnick Education Wing. These master classes provide an opportunity for young musicians to work with Gateways’ professional musicians on repertoire they are currently studying—either solo pieces or orchestral excerpts.

The master class offerings include:
  • Double bass, led by Joseph Conyers (principal, Philadelphia Orchestra)
  • Brass ensembles, led by Gateways Brass Collective (Herb Smith and Courtney Jones, Trumpets; Larry Williams, Horn; Isrea Butler, Trombone, and Jerome Stover, Tuba
  • Percussion led by (Raynor Carroll, co-principal, Los Angeles Philharmonic, retired).

The Gateways Music Festival connects and supports professional classical musicians of African descent and enlightens and inspires communities through the power of performance. These master classes are geared towards high school-aged students of all backgrounds who have a significant commitment to musical studies. NYC local students on a pre-professional path will benefit the most from the opportunity, though the percussion class is also suitable for beginning to intermediate players. There will also be limited room for auditors, who can mark their interest below.

There is no cost to participate, and we are pleased to offer those who participate a complimentary ticket to the Gateways Festival Orchestra’s performance at Carnegie Hall on Sunday, April 27 at 2:00 pm. Carnegie Hall will contact you directly via email if you have been accepted to participate.
