This option would extend the existing Shooks Run Trail south to the Fountain Creek Greenway, and in the process would complete the Legacy Loop trail that is planned to encircle Downtown. However, this option would not include any additional park or open space improvements. Option 2 (the Greenway and Linear Park Option) includes the same bridge and drainage improvements as Option 1, but focuses on the creation of a continuous linear park or “greenway” along Shooks Run from Patty Jewett Golf Course south to Fountain Creek. The option creates larger parks and open spaces at various locations, including new neighborhood parks and environmental enhancements to wetland areas. These improvements, as well as the creation of improved bike and pedestrian connections from nearby neighborhoods to the Downtown area, would help to support changes in land uses on either side of the corridor, in particular between Pikes Peak Avenue and Costilla Street. Option 3 (Transformative) includes necessary bridge and drainage improvements, and goes beyond the idea of the linear park (in Option 2) to establish a new vision for the Shooks Run corridor. The Transformative option, as the name suggests, makes Shooks Run a central part of the city, helps to stimulate a number of new uses along the corridor, and ties parts of the corridor more closely to the ongoing revitalization of Downtown. This option would include various potential “destination” elements (examples include a botanic garden, an amphitheater, an adventure course, and other uses that would draw from the larger community), creation of a greenway from Patty Jewett to Fountain Creek, and would help support new mixed-use development in various areas along Shooks Run.
