Proposed Recovery Strategy for Dolphin and Union Caribou in the NWT

Introduction to the survey

Dolphin and Union caribou are considered a species at risk in the Northwest Territories (NWT). They were listed as an Endangered species in 2024 under the Species at Risk (NWT) Act. Under the Act, a recovery strategy must be developed for an Endangered species.

The Conference of Management Authorities (CMA) has agreed to adopt the Management Plan for the Dolphin and Union Caribou in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut to guide conservation and recovery of the species in the NWT. The management plan was developed by partners across the range of Dolphin and Union caribou in the NWT and Nunavut and released in 2018.

The CMA has also drafted an NWT addition that points to updated information on Dolphin and Union caribou and their habitat that has become available in the years since the management plan was released. Together, these two parts will form the recovery strategy for the NWT.
