The E.J. Shaheen Chair for Teaching Excellence Award is presented annually to a full-time Glen Oaks Community College faculty member who demonstrates excellence in teaching, maintains high professional standards, and goes above and beyond to support students.
Students are an important part of this recognition process. You do not need to write a formal recommendation or evaluate your instructor’s teaching methods. Simply tell us, in your own words, about a faculty member who encouraged you, helped you understand something difficult, supported you through a challenge, made learning more meaningful, or positively influenced your experience at Glen Oaks.
The award was established in 1982 through an endowment created by E.J. Shaheen, who played an important role in the founding of Glen Oaks Community College. Mr. Shaheen served on the College’s Board of Trustees, including six years as chair, and helped establish the Glen Oaks Foundation in 1979.
The first award was presented in 1985, and more than 35 faculty members have since been recognized. Past recipients are honored in the E.J. Shaheen Learning Commons on the Glen Oaks campus.
