SVSU First-Year Writing Program's Guided Self-Placement

At SVSU, the First-Year Writing (FYW) Program consists of two courses: ENGL 080: Basic Writing Skills, and ENGL 111: Composition I. You’ve already been pre-registered for one of these two courses (based on your high school GPA or other factors). Click here for a detailed description of each course.

 

We understand that everyone’s writing experiences and confidence levels are different, so to give you the most control and choice over your freshman writing course(s), we’re asking that you complete this guided self-placement survey. In the survey, you’ll answer simple questions about your past writing experiences, your skills in writing and reading, and your extracurricular activities and personal obligations. Based on your responses, you will be guided to one of SVSU's writing courses. The guidance, however, is only a suggestion based on your responses. The choice to change your pre-registered English course is entirely up to you.

 

Completing the survey should take at least 10 minutes. Take your time and respond to each question carefully and honestly.
