A UU Pilgrimage to Africa

Reverend William G. Sinkford

Reverend William G. Sinkford
On November 8, 2008 Reverend William G. Sinkford,  President of the Unitarian Universalist Association, will embark on a 15-day pilgrimage to six African countries: South Africa, Uganda, Kenya, Senegal, Ghana and Nigeria.

The four general purposes of this journey are:

  1. To meet with old and new colleagues among the Unitarians and Unitarian Universalists of Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria and South Africa,
  2. To learn from the experience and wisdom of leaders in Truth and Reconciliation work in South Africa, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu,
  3. To learn from leaders of social justice and human rights organizations involved in diverse struggles, including: LGBT Rights, Fair Wages, HIV/AIDS, Women's Rights, and Socially Responsible Investing,
  4. To visit the UNESCO World Heritage site and historic witness to the Atlantic Slave Trade: Île de Gorée.

There are a variety of ways that Unitarian Universalists and UU congregations can participate in this journey (see uua.org for examples). One opportunity is to participate in the "Propose a Question" Contest

The Propose a Question Contest
  • Is there a question you'd like Reverend Sinkford to ask Archbishop Tutu?
  • Is there a question you have for Unitarian leaders in Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria or South Africa?
  • Would you like to ask leaders in Human Rights struggles a particular question?

If so, or if you have a question related to any of the goals of the pilgrimage that you would like Reverend Sinkford to ask people that he meets with, please fill out the form below. We'll poll visitors to Rev. Sinkford's Africa Pilgrimage blog to determine the contest winners, and we'll report back on the responses that Reverend Sinkford receives from African leaders.
