You Belong!

The Belonging Initiative™ is an effort to move from merely welcoming people to including people fully so they know they belong.

Belonging: more than merely welcome
Welcoming places are friendly and inviting, but not every person who is invited to an event is later included as a full member in the core group, made to feel that they belong, and can make decisions with the group.

If you belong somewhere, you don't just feel like you belong, you have some tangible evidence. When you're beginning to belong, it's not just "come on in." It's more: someone remembers your life and asks how your mother's operation went or whether your roof is still leaking. At its best, belonging means you've got a key to the house, a regular order at the restaurant, a seat on the board. You feel truly included. You have a network that asks you for favors and does favors for you, like sitting with your mother at the hospital or helping you find the right roofer.

Welcoming is good. It says, "come on in!" Belonging is great: it's when you can say, "I have a seat at the table."
