Durham Arts Council, producer and presenter of CenterFest Arts Festival for 37 years, has announced its plans to dramatically expand and re-envision CenterFest, the longest running outdoor arts festival in North Carolina. DAC is working with key community partners in this effort and will involve the business community, creative community, and individuals in planning during the months ahead. DAC and its key partners will “rest” the festival for 2011 in order to launch a 1 year Visioning/Production Process for the 2012 expanded arts and entertainment festival format.

We value your input and ideas! Please respond to the questions below. You can skip questions if you like. Thanks in advance for your participation in this visioning process.

* 1. Which years have you attended CenterFest?
(click all that apply)

* 2. What favorite memories do you have of previous CenterFest events?

* 3. Juried Visual Artists are a key component of any arts festival. Over the years, CenterFest has featured 120 – 130 high quality fine art and fine craft artists from across the U.S. with approx. 60% North Carolina artists. The larger U.S. festivals showcase 200 to 300. Please give your feedback and suggestions on the Visual Artists component of the festival for the future.

* 4. Performing Arts and Entertainment. An exciting drawing card for any festival! Please give your feedback and suggestions for the future. Include ideas about music, dance, other performing arts, venues, stages, performance times, etc.

* 5. Community Showcase – CenterFest has traditionally included booths for Durham non-profits and government services. Please give us your feedback on this festival component.

* 6. Food and Beverage – Gotta have it! Please let us know what you would like to eat and drink. What aspect of this would make CenterFest ultra cool? Edible Arts, BrewFest Garden, Wine Festival? -- Your thoughts?

* 7. What new Food and Beverage exhibits would you like to see? (Check all that apply)

* 8. Other Creative Arts – Film, Techies, Gaming, Design, Architecture – what other creative elements should CenterFest have?

* 9. Interactive Creative Elements – Kids and Adults – what hands-on, self-expression activities would you like the most?

* 10. Venues and Sites – please give your feedback on location, venues, footprint. Bear in mind, show management has to deal with required linear feet for booths, gate configurations, security, load-in logistics, street closures, site costs etc etc. But in a perfect world, and if we can afford it, what would be really cool?

* 11. Admission – many major arts and entertainment festivals in the U.S. are ticketed. CenterFest has always been free with a suggested donation of $4. To make this festival bigger and better it will take great ideas, $$ money and human resources. Durham Arts Council has privately funded this event for 37 years with a combination of vendor fees, sponsors, gate donations, and DAC Annual Arts Fund donations. Did you know that CenterFest used to lose $30,000 to $40,000 per year? Our board mandated that we get it to a break even in recent years which we have done – currently about $144,000 in revenue and expense (including in-kind). Now we look forward to how we financially reconfigure this for a bigger event! Please let us know your feedback on resources and admission:

I would be willing to pay the following admission to a bigger, better CenterFest:

* 12. Other thoughts on financial aspects of producing a major festival?

* 13. What is a favorite festival you have attended in recent years?
