A new Waterfront Design Plan is coming to Sault Ste. Marie!

Tourism Sault Ste. Marie, in partnership with the City of Sault Ste. Marie and Destination Northern Ontario, is developing a Waterfront Design Plan. We are looking for community support to help shape the waterfront! In the following survey, we’re asking residents of Sault Ste. Marie to share feedback on draft Design Concepts for the waterfront.

What we’ve heard (so far)
In Phase 1 (December 2023 and January 2024), we heard from over 900 residents of Sault Ste. Marie, who shared their ideas for the types of activities, events and programming they wish to see included at the waterfront in the future. Thank you to all who shared their vision for the Sault!

Join us again in Phase 2
We are now in the second phase of the project and are excited to reveal the draft Design Concepts for public feedback. The Design Concepts displayed in the survey below were generated with input from members of the public (Phase 1 survey results), stakeholders (Phase 1 stakeholder workshops) and City staff.

About the Project
Taking into consideration existing infrastructure along the waterfront, this initiative presents an opportunity to develop a plan that will support opportunities for tourism, community and economic development, and placemaking, and has the potential to transform our existing waterfront to a world-class feature and put Sault Ste. Marie “on the map.”

This Waterfront Design Planning process will guide what the future of these lands will look like by defining the vision and strategic directions together. Residents, community organizations, landowners, business owners and other community stakeholders all have an opportunity to influence the decisions about how the Sault Ste. Marie waterfront will take shape and what role these lands will have in our future.
