Background to the ASEAN Economic Community
The establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015 is a major milestone in the regional economic integration agenda in ASEAN, offering opportunities in the form of a dynamic, growing, and integrated market of over 650 million people, a trade and production hub powerhouse, and attractive investment destination.

The AEC Blueprint 2025, adopted by the ASEAN Leaders at the 27th ASEAN Summit on 22 November 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, provides broad directions for ASEAN economic integration from 2016 to 2025. The Blueprint is aimed towards achieving the vision of having an AEC by 2025 that is highly integrated and cohesive; competitive, innovative and dynamic; with enhanced connectivity and sectoral cooperation; and a more resilient, inclusive, and people-oriented, people-centred community, integrated with the global economy. Its operationalisation is supported by way of implementation of various workplans of the AEC sectoral bodies.

The ASEAN Secretariat is mandated to conduct a Mid-Term Review (MTR) as envisaged in the Blueprint. The main objective of the MTR is to determine the progress and effectiveness of the AEC in achieving the five interrelated and mutually reinforcing characteristics underlined in the Blueprint, which embodies the vision for ASEAN regional economic integration 2016-2025.
