Skills audit - St Peters: Roof Repair and Re-ordering for a Toilet/Servery project

Introduction and instructions

Good governance is essential to the effectiveness of any project, regardless of its size or nature. This is particularly the case in the not-for-profit or "third" sector where there are extra legal requirements (particularly for churches) and a strong moral or values driven purpose behind an organisation. Few projects can now afford to have poor governance and many fail solely because this was the case.

By project governance we mean the roles, processes, and decision-making structures that ensure a project meets its objectives (timescales, costs and quality). This usually includes a project Steering Group (a committee with authority to make decisions about the project), a Project Manager and other roles specific to the project including representation or input from those who the project is intended to benefit and the person or organisation who ultimately owns the project.

An important dimension of governance is making sure that the people involved have, between them, the capability and capacity required both to lead and to support the successful delivery of the project.

This skills audit is intended to assess what skills, experience and knowledge are currently available from those involved in the St Peters Roof Repair and Re-ordering for a Toilet/Servery project, and what skills, experience and knowledge are considered important for its successful delivery.

The survey is based on the working assumption that the project will be overseen by a Steering Group of volunteers and that there will be other volunteers involved in its delivery who are not members of the Steering Group. It seeks to address the skills, experience and knowledge required both on the Steering Group and amongst the wider group of volunteers.

The survey is structured in several sections/pages, covering the following aspects of skills, experience and knowledge:
  • Project specific
  • Governance and oversight
  • Risk and regulation
  • Financial management
  • Fundraising
  • Communications
  • People
  • Other
In each section you are asked to rate your own expertise and the expertise you think it is important to have available to the project on the Steering Group and amongst a wider group of volunteers.

If you do not understand any of the areas of skills, experience or knowledge listed within the survey, please select ‘don’t know’ as your response.

Please complete all the mandatory questions. It should take no more than 15-20 minutes to complete all questions. Once all responses are completed a report will be compiled identifying areas for development and recommending ways forward.
