Polk Street Survey

Project introduction

The City of Eugene is considering adding bike lanes to Polk Street between 2nd Avenue and 18th Avenue to create a safer and more comfortable route to travel north and south by bike. Polk Street is a popular bike route and serves as an alternative to biking on Chambers Street. While some people may feel comfortable with bike riders and drivers sharing the same travel lane on Polk Street, research suggests that most people prefer it when bike riders and drivers each have their own dedicated space, especially as vehicle speeds and the number of people driving on a street increases.

Traffic counts show that Polk Street, particularly the segment between 7th Avenue and 18th Avenue, has about 4,000 vehicles a day. Best practice recommends separating people on bikes and people driving cars when a street has more than 3,000 vehicles per day. Currently, Polk Street has two vehicle travel lanes and two parking lanes. Adding bike lanes to Polk Street would likely require removing some or all of the on-street parking.

This survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Responses will help inform decisions about the design of Polk Street. Answers to this survey will remain anonymous. Quotes from individual responses may be shared publicly, but respondents will remain anonymous. This survey will close on Friday, February 6th.
