1. The Nutrition and Health Research Lab is looking for adolescents currently between the age of 12-14 to participate in the Study of Nutrition and Activity in Kids (UB SNAK).  This study will require 9 visits to our laboratory over the next 2 years. The first 5 visits will occur over 6 weeks; the next after 6 months, another 9 months from then, and two visits approximately 2 years from the first appointment. Compensation will total $200 over 2 years. The purpose of the study is to determine how repeated intake of snack food for two weeks will affect the preferences of adolescents. We will ask your child to eat two different snack foods (which we provide), each for two separate weeks.  We can only accept one child per household.

If you decide to participate in this research study, you and your child will be asked to visit our office for 5 sessions in the near future. The sessions can take place between 2:00 – 7:00 PM based on your availability, at UB South Campus.

On the first visit (approximately 2.5 hours) you and your child will complete consent forms and many questionnaires. Your child will have his/her heart rate, blood pressure, height, weight, and body composition measured. The parent or guardian in attendance will also have their height and weight measured during their child’s appointment. In addition, the child will play a computer game, be asked to use exercise equipment for 4 minutes, and rate their preferences for the equipment. They will need to wear athletic clothes to this appointment. They will not be able to eat for 1 hour before the appointment.

On the second visit (30-45min) they will eat a granola bar, play a computer game and then be given a snack food to take home, selected based on your child’s ratings. Your child will be asked to consume one portion per day for two weeks. Your child will be asked to email or text the lab at the end of each night to indicate that they have eaten their snack. They will not be able to eat for 2 hours before this appointment.

During the third visit (30-45min) your child will eat a granola bar and play a computer game once again. Between the 3rd and 4th visits, will be a 1-week gap where your child will wear a watch monitoring their activity. Your child will keep a habit book for that week to record the foods that they have eaten. The 4th visit will be just like the 2nd and the 5th visit will be just like the 3rd. They will not be able to eat for 2 hours before these appointments.

After these 5 visits your child will be paid $65, and as long as all materials have been completed along the way, they will receive a bonus of $35, for a total of $100.   Once your child completes the first 5 visits, the parent will be entered into a drawing to win a $100 check. The drawing will occur once per every 10 families.

Six months after the first appointment, you will come back into the lab, so that your child can have their body composition measured and to answer some questionnaires. The parent will also be re-weighed. The participant will be paid $25 for this short appointment (~60-90 min). Another 9 months later, you and your child will be asked to come in again for another ~60 min appointment. This visit will pay $30 for its completion.

Finally, 24 months after the first appointment, your child will be asked to come to the lab for 2 appointments (~60 min each) again to answer questions, eat a granola bar, play the computer game, and to have their body composition measured. There will be a 1 week break in between the appointments when your child will again wear the activity monitor watch! They will come in for their last appointment and be paid $45 more.  Over the course of the study your child will earn $200.
