In Spring 2023, NYC DOT updated the configuration of the East Drive, following recommendations made from the Prospect Park Drive Safety study. The pilot design:
- Adds pedestrian space on the outer side of East Drive to reduce pedestrian overcrowding, crossing conflicts, and crossing distances
- Removes the vehicle-only lane and equally allocates that space to cyclists and pedestrians
- Authorized vehicles now use the right-hand portion of the of the center lane, where the bike sharrows (symbols that indicate shared bike and vehicle space) are located
- Adds a new pedestrian crossing south of Center Drive and expands painted space at all pedestrian crossings
