Smart Urban Farm Factories - Transform Peel (Consumer Study)

Transform Peel

The Transform Peel program is located in the Shire of Murray within the Peel region of Western Australia and is devised, developed and delivered by the Peel Development Commission. The $49.3 million transformational program is currently funded by the Western Australian Government’s Royalties for Regions program.

Transform Peel comprises three integrated, strategic elements: a 28,000 ha Peel Food Zone, a 1,000 ha Peel Business Park and the Peel Integrated Water Initiative. It is a 35 year program which is projected to culminate in $16.2 billion pa economic output by completion in 2050.

Peel Region:
The Peel region is approximately 70 km south of Perth and forms the Peri-urban area (in conjunction with the Wheatbelt Region) surrounding Perth.  The region covers an area of 5,648 square kilometres, including 137 square kilometres of inland waterways and five local government areas. It is a key strategic focus area of the State’s plans for growth and economic development as a rural—urban transition zone where urban and rural uses coexist to create a dynamic environment.

The Peel region is strategically positioned to contribute to food and nutrition security. The region also has capacity to capture high-value export opportunities to capitalise on global demand for food. Traditional food industries based in the Perth Metropolitan area are transitioning to the peri-urban Peel Food Zone, which will provide a secure long term location with modern infrastructure, transport and supply chain logistics to support efficient agrifood value chains. The Peel Food Zone will incorporate innovative food technology solutions while protecting the productive capacity of our soil and water resources, and maintaining Western Australia’s world-class biosecurity system to deliver clean, safe and premium products.

Peel Development Commission:
The Peel Development Commission is a State Government statutory authority established in 1994 under the Regional Development Commissions Act 1993. The Commission is run by a board of management comprising nine members selected from the community, local governments and by Ministerial appointment. It is one of nine Commissions, each serving a different region of Western Australia.
