Towards an Inclusive Smart Economy & Vibrant Society Project

Introduction

The Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) is leading a multi-year project that aims to determine the economic and labour impact of "smart city" developments in Canada. To achieve this, we are consulting with companies that contribute to the smart economy via the provision or development of products or services that either directly or indirectly improve the quality of life of residents. This survey should take no more than 10 minutes to complete.

Working Definition of “Smart City”

A smart city is a designation given to a city that incorporates information and communication technologies (ICT) to enhance the quality and performance of urban services. This can include anything from: improved infrastructure, energy efficiency, improved transportation services, enhanced utilities in order to reduce resource consumption, waste reduction, improved access to healthcare and e-services, and many others. The overarching aim of a smart city is to enhance the quality of life for its residents through smart technology.

Examples could include:
  • The application of a wide variety of digital and electronic technologies to the city and its communities.
  • The development of energy-efficient and sustainable infrastructure.
  • The embedding of ICT/technology services and applications within government systems.
  • The development of multi-modal transportation networks utilizing technology for improved connectivity and traffic management.
  • The development of e-healthcare services allowing for broader access and improved healthcare outcomes.
