Factors that Influence Type II Diabetes

Rutgers University is partnering with Family Voices to learn what families know about the development of Type 2 diabetes in children in teens. This includes:
  • Community factors 
  • Individual behaviors 
  • Preferred language for discussing children's and teens' weight
  • The medical tests they would agree to for their children or teens
Please take 3 minutes to answer the following questions.
You will not be asked for any identifying information. 
Your responses will be used to help design the project.
1.Community factors make a big difference in which kids/teens gets type 2 diabetes.
2.Having excess weight increases the risk of kids and teens getting type 2 diabetes.
3.The word obese is not a nice word to use when talking about kids and teens.
4.Doing exercise and being physically fit decreases the risk for a child or teen to get type 2 diabetes.
5.In my neighborhood, there are safe places for kids to play actively outside.
6.Good health care can prevent type 2 diabetes.
7.Knowing what can lead to type 2 diabetes can help families to prevent their children and teens getting it.
8.If I knew my child was at high risk for type 2 diabetes and there was something I could do to prevent it, I would do it.
9.Stress is an important part of why children get type 2 diabetes.
10.I am comfortable with a blood test being part of a study of type 2 diabetes in children and teens.
11.I am comfortable with a saliva test being part of a study of type 2 diabetes in children and teens.
12.I am comfortable with my child/teen using a special swab like a Q-tip to collect a little poo for a test of the bacteria in their body as part of a study of type 2 diabetes in children and teens.
