In early November 2011 the UK Government agreed to fund the construction of an airport on St Helena. South African company Basil Read (pty) Ltd. was awarded the contract to build the airport. Preliminary work has already begun on St Helena and in early 2012 construction of a temporary landing jetty, access road to the airport site and other infrastructure will commence. The airport is scheduled to be operational by late 2015.

The construction and operational phases of the airport will create many job opportunities. Initially there will be employment opportunities connected directly with the construction of the airport and supporting infrastructure, but additionally there will be increased demand for other skills and services, for example, in catering, accommodation, transport and leisure. When the airport is operational increased tourism will create demand in many areas.
