The Michigan Community Service Commission is providing volunteer project support to Michigan organizations as part of the 2019 Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service.

MLK National Day of Service support intended to encourage volunteer projects that address at least one of the following focus areas:
  • Education
  • Economic Opportunity
  • Racial Equity
  • Supporting Veterans and Military Families
  • Neighborhood Stabilization
  • Hunger & Homelessness
All proposed events or activities must occur on or around Martin Luther King, Jr. Day beginning Friday January 18, 2019 through Friday, January 25, 2019. Preference will be given to events that occur sometime during Friday, January 18th through Monday, January 21st.

Award Amounts
Awards valued at up to $500 are available from partners Michigan Nonprofit Association and Youth Service America and will be distributed based on the following scale:
$500- Engage 50 or more volunteers
$250- Engage at least 25 volunteers
$100- Engage at least 10 volunteers
All partners must provide $1 for $1 cash or in-kind match support. 

Funds must be used to support elements of a service project. Please note MLK project awards are available solely to engage people in volunteer projects – not community engagement events.

Priority will be given to applications that demonstrate as many of the following criteria as possible:

-Projects that are planned for preferred dates of January 18 - 21, 2019
-Projects that show evidence of involving youth in planning as well as engaging youth to serve and participate in 
-Projects that engage teams of State of Michigan employees
-Projects that demonstrate the use of effective partnerships to meet community need; including collaboration among multiple organizations such as higher education institutions, volunteer centers, youth service organizations, State of Michigan workplaces, and/or national service programs
-Project that demonstrate the ability to benefit the community after the MLK event

WHO CAN APPLY

National service grantees, volunteer centers, nonprofits, K-12 and higher education institutions are eligible to apply. All applications will be considered.  It is recommended that if potential applicants do not satisfy the eligible entities to apply criteria that they collaborate with one of the aforementioned parties to apply.

Notification of Award - All applicants will be notified electronically before or by December 15, 2018

Allowable Expenses:

Project awards funds must be used to support essential volunteer project materials that correlate with the volunteer project activities outlined in the project description section of the application.

Applicants are encouraged to find alternate or match funding for supplemental items that are not essential to the success of the volunteer project. Please use the budget explanation section of the application to clearly explain why the items listed in the budget are essential to the success of the community volunteer project.
