1. Protection of those under my care

If you have someone under your care such as a child, grandchild or dependent other, it can be difficult to fully explain the situation. However, it is important that everyone who may be affected by the situation is as informed as possible.

Factors such as age and level of understanding of a dependent other may prevent the implementation of a full protection plan. However, there are protective measures that can be put in place.

It may be helpful to create a “code word” or secret gesture that can be used when outside help such as the police or family members are needed. Using this method will help to increase your safety during an emergency or dangerous situation.

Asking others who have regular contact with a dependent other for help can also increase safety. Telling others of your situation and (where possible) providing a description of the person(s) that is a potential threat, can help to protect those under your care when you can’t be there.
