Dear South Burlington Business Owner or Representative,

In order to treat the wastewater generated by the businesses in South Burlington, the City owns and operates two wastewater treatment facilities (WWTF), the Bartlett Bay WWTF and the Airport Parkway WWTF. Each WWTF has a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit issued by the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources (VTANR). As part of these NPDES permits, the City is in the process of responding to a permit condition which requires us to obtain detailed information from users of the City’s sanitary sewer system. The information collected will allow us to better understand any pollutants of concern discharged into the City’s sanitary sewer system. The goals of this effort are to reduce the frequency and likelihood of disruptive and costly sewer backups, improve our WWTF’s ability to remove pollutants, and ultimately improve water quality in Lake Champlain.

To meet these goals, we first need to work with you and learn more about the nature of your business’ wastewater discharge. Specifically, in order to better understand the nature of your business’ sanitary sewer discharge, your response to the attached Initial Sewer User Questionnaire is required no later than November 27, 2023.

This questionnaire will help the City identify the type of businesses discharging wastewater to the City’s sanitary sewer system as well as the origin, type, and general quantity of pollutants that may be associated with each business’ wastewater flow. Depending on your responses, follow up may be required to better understand the nature of your business and its wastewater flow.

Please complete the questionnaire using the survey link no later than November 27, 2023. Should any business owners require more information, need assistance, or would prefer to return the survey by email or mail, please contact our consultant’s representative:

Paula Boyle, Senior Project Engineer pboyle@hoyletanner.com
Hoyle, Tanner & Associates, Inc., 125 College Street, 4th Floor, Burlington, VT 05401

Your cooperation with this questionnaire is very much appreciated. If you would like to speak with a City employee about this questionnaire, please contact:

Robert Fischer, Water Quality Superintendent at bfischer@southburlingtonvt.gov or (802) 658-7964

Your business’ accurate response to this initial questionnaire will eliminate the need for the City to follow up with you by other means in order to obtain this necessary information. Please help us reduce the cost of this data collection effort by responding to the questionnaire no later than November 27, 2023.
