I am asking you to participate in a research study entitled “Knowing Circe”.
This study is being conducted by Karin Rainbird, Master of Divinity in Pagan History and Theology Department at Cherry Hill Seminary. The Faculty Advisor for this is Deirdre Rogers.
The Purpose of this research is to:
1. To establish how much modern pagans know about Circe
2. To gauge how popular Circe is as a Goddess both to Hellenic and Roman Polytheists and to witches.
3. To examine different perspectives on Circe and who she is (e.g. sorceress, goddess, feminist icon, villainess) amongst polytheists and witches.
4. To gain an idea of how many people (as a percentage of my sample) actively worship or work with Circe.
5. To examine differences of perspective and in practices between those who identify as polytheists and those who identify as witches (e.g. worship verses spellcraft)
Participation in this survey is voluntary and anonymous. You should not include your name or personal details, to ensure anonymity. This survey should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete. You will be asked 21 questions which include preliminary demographic questions followed by questions regarding your pagan/polytheist path. your knowledge of Circe, and how much she features in your practice if at all. Some questions require simple yes/no responses whereas others are multiple choice or open questions which allow you to make comments.
Participation is voluntary and so you may discontinue at any time or skip any questions which make you feel uncomfortable.
I do not anticipate any risks from participating in this research beyond everyday use of the Internet. De-identified data from this study may be shared with the research community at large to advance knowledge of pagan practices.
A potential benefit from completing the survey is that it may encourage participants to think about a Goddess they have not previously thought much about, or to reflect on their relationship with Circe if they do know more about her.
There will be no financial compensation for participating in this research.
Please note that the survey is being conducted through Survey Monkey, a company not affiliated with Cherry Hill Seminary and with its own privacy and security policies that you can find at its website. Data will be gathered and stored in my Survey Monkey account which is password protected. Results will be downloaded on to my personal computer and stored on my password protected hard drive.
If you choose to contact me by email, please note that email communication is neither private nor secure. Though I am taking precautions to protect your privacy, you should be aware that information sent through email could be read by a third party.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding your rights as a subject in this study, you may report your concerns or complaints anonymously online via NAVEX at www.hotline.cornell.edu. NAVEX is an independent organisation that serves as a liaison between the University and the person bringing the complaint so that anonymity can be ensured.
