Save Fairfield Halls from Labour’s big gamble
Croydon’s Labour council has recently announced that it intends to change the plan the previous Conservative administration had for refurbishing Fairfield Halls. The Tory plans were to invest the full required cost of £33M and do the refurbishment in phases to allow the venue to remain open throughout.
By contrast the Labour cabinet agreed to invest only £12M, and is gambling on building flats around the Halls then selling them off to raise the money to finish the job. Worse still, it has already announced that the council will close Fairfield from next summer, before it has planning permission, a developer on board or the funds in place to do the work. If they get it wrong we end up with nothing: it’s a huge gamble.
