Introduction

SAGE, through its National Resource Center on LGBT Aging, has been providing LGBT aging cultural competency training for the past 5 years. In May 2016 SAGE brought these trainings into a new LGBT aging cultural competency training credential program called SAGECare. SAGECare offers trained agencies the opportunity to receive a SAGECare branded credential that demonstrates their commitment to LGBT older adults. Beginning with in-person training and expanding to webinars and on-demand content, SAGE and our Certified Trainers have trained over 12,000 providers in all 50 states. Our rigorous evaluation analysis demonstrates that SAGE trainings create positive changes in participants’ knowledge and attitudes about LGBT older adults and aging.

SAGECare Trainers are certified to conduct in-person one- and four-hour trainings. We hope that trainers are available to facilitate one or two trainings per month. These trainings employ several different teaching methods to engage participants in developing empathy for LGBT older adults, learn about LGBT cultures, and help them gain the skills to provide culturally competent care to LGBT people. Trainings are fun, challenging, often emotional, and impactful.

Are trainers paid for trainings?: Yes! Anytime you facilitate a training, you will be paid. The 2017 Trainers rates are as follows:

$200 for facilitating a one-hour, in-person training

$700 per four-hour, in-person training

Travel costs are negotiated for training that requires more than 30 miles of one-way travel.

Trainers are not responsible for negotiating contracts, but they are encouraged to promote SAGECare trainings in their local communities and networks.  There are also referral fees available for training contracts originating with a Trainer – the referral rates will be outlined during the Train the Trainer.

Next steps: There are 15 spots in the Train the Trainer, and we are seeking a diverse group of applicants with special emphasis on trainers located in New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington DC. We have 5 spots available for trainers outside of these areas. Applicants will be evaluated according to their training experience, subject matter expertise, capacity to conduct trainings, and potential to attract new training client
