Position: Assistant Campus Diversity Officer

Statement: Please consider my nomination to serve on the Staff Advisory Board (SAB). I am interested in serving on the SAB because the mission to support both the educational goals of the University and the welfare and diversity of the staff is directly in line with why I chose to work at UC Santa Cruz. This campus has a long-standing history in affecting change in our campus community and systemwide. I want to serve as a voice for our staff community and engage in discourse on important issues that are affecting our climate. Campus climate is “the current attitudes, behaviors and standards of faculty, staff, administrators and students concerning the level of respect for individual needs, abilities and potential." (University of California, Office of the President: Staff are significantly impacted by campus climate. According to workplace studies, the personal and professional development of professionals is greatly enhanced through a healthy working environment.

As the Assistant Campus Diversity Officer, I regularly engage with senior leadership on important issues related to diversity and inclusion, and want to extend that dialogue to help review staff policies and advise senior leadership on how to affect positive change for staff. Prior to working in higher education, I practiced law for five years addressing public interest concerns which is beneficial in reviewing policies and making recommendations. I am currently assisting the Chancellor with his advisory council on campus climate issues and leading the implementation stage on our campus for the recent release of the systemwide campus climate survey findings. I also coordinate the Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program which serves as a professional development opportunity for staff and faculty that offers an in-depth examination of diversity and differences in order to gain a great understanding of how we can and why we should work together to build a stronger and more inclusive community at UC Santa Cruz. It is important that we uphold our Principles of Community that are designed to promote and protect an environment that values and supports every person in an atmosphere of civility, honesty, cooperation, professionalism and fairness. And “every person” includes staff who are integral to our campus. Without staff, who are stewards of our profession, there would be no ability to operate or accomplish our mission as an institution.

Position: Lead Digital Media Specialist

Statement: As an employee for 19 years and alumna (Oakes, Class of 1999), I have a deep appreciation for the UCSC campus, it's unique culture, and the amazing students that we are honored to support in advancing their education.

I would like to deepen my service to the campus and it's dedicated staff by representing them on the Staff Advisory Board, while working to improve conditions for all the members of our community. Over the last 5 years I've spent significant time researching policies and information pertaining to staff benefits, retirement, and general employment. I believe I bring a strong knowledge base and proficient understanding of both campus and Office of the President guidelines relating to staff.

For the last three years I have served as a volunteer and the accountant for campus Holiday Food Drive. This past year I have had the great honor to become a mentor for the Smith Renaissance Society. I would very much appreciate your support, and thank you for your consideration.

As the out going Chair for SAB I would like to say how much I have enjoyed my time on the board, serving as Chair and as junior delegate to CUCSA, the systemwide council of UC staff assemblies.
