Social enterprises are businesses that exist to create social, environmental or cultural change in the world based on a particular problem or challenge that has been identified.  They do this by understanding the challenge, using business (trade) to direct revenue and resources towards solving that problem and doing it in an ethical, sustainable, and empathetic way.

A social enterprise is a business for good. They trade like any other business but exist specifically to make the world a better place. A social enterprise has: a social mission embedded in the DNA of the business to directly address social, cultural and/or environmental needs; derives a majority of its revenue through trade rather than through grants, donations or gifts; reinvests profit and resources back into their mission and impact model so that public benefit outweighs private benefit.
