Course Title:  STATE-OF-THE-ART DETAILS FOR MASONRY CONSTRUCTION - 2 PDH 

Speaker: Richard Filloramo, Regional Director of Technical Services, International Masonry Institute (IMI)

This presentation includes state-of-the-art details and specifications for masonry that have emerged as a result of new code, energy, safety and moisture control requirements.  It will address the importance of coordination between the structural engineer and architect.
This presentation will assist architects, structural engineers, designers, specifiers and detailers with structural masonry, anchored masonry veneer, adhered veneer, rain screen walls, restoration, flashing details, top of wall details, partition walls, column details, beam details, shelf angles, accent bands, single wythe masonry, movement joints, exterior CMU, moisture control, large format tile, terrazzo details, and many other related wall systems.  It will cover brick, natural stone, manufactured stone, CMU, cast stone, ornamental precast, tile and terrazzo.  These recent details can be incorporated immediately into any masonry design project.
Learning Objectives

Coordinate architectural and structural masonry details.  Identify the components and functions of the insulated building envelope.  Implement compliant and safe details based on new building code standards.  Identify design and construction problems that may occur in masonry wall systems.  Analyze the initial cost of thermal bridging with respect to energy savings and occupant comfort.

Participants will be able to design new masonry walls and restoration projects using new details resulting from recent code changes. Participants will be able to acquire information on detailing drainage and ventilated wall systems as required by the building codes. Participants will be able to identify critical elements and appropriate materials that are part of successful masonry designs. Specify stone, brick, CMU, tile, restoration and other materials and elements that are incorporated into the design.  Acquire information on new products and systems used in new and existing masonry.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Richard Filloramo is Area Director of Market Development and Technical Services for the International Masonry Institute New England Region - Connecticut Office.  He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Architecture from Ohio State University and an Associate’s Degree in Construction Technology from Wentworth Institute of Technology.
Mr. Filloramo served as the national IMI liaison for building codes and standards.  Mr. Filloramo is a member of the Masonry Standards Joint Committee, the code writing body responsible for the Masonry 530 Code. He has served on numerous committees and has been a member of The Masonry Society, American Institute of Architects, National Concrete Masonry Association, Brick Institute of America, Construction Specification Institute, Building Safety Seismic Committee of NEHRP, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Concrete Institute, ASTM, ICC, and several other national and regional organizations.  He has written many technical papers, spearheaded efforts to educate the industry on new masonry codes and design requirements for masonry construction, and lectured across the country.  Mr. Filloramo has more than 41 years of experience in the masonry industry: 11 years as a mason contractor, 10 years as Director of the Masonry Institute of Connecticut and 21 years as Director of Marketing and Technical Services for the International Masonry Institute - New England Region.
