We want your views on our proposals to make changes to the boundary of the Streatham High Road and Streatham Hill Conservation Area (CA).

The Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 defines conservation areas as ‘areas of special architectural or historic interest the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance’. The Act requires Local Planning Authorities (LPAs) to revisit conservation area designation ‘from time to time’.

The Tesco / Streatham Leisure Centre redevelopment which opened in 2013 necessitated the demolition of Streatham’s Art Deco ice rink, inter-war swimming pool, and the Edwardian church hall serving the Streatham United Reformed Church. The demolition of these buildings has resulted in harm to the character and appearance of the Streatham High Road / Streatham Hill CA . The land within the CA to the south of Streatham Railway Station is now largely occupied by the modern development which detracts from the character and appearance of the CA.

The proposed boundary changes would see the following buildings on Streatham High Road removed from the conservation area:
  • Streatham United Reformed Church
  • Numbers 1 – 9,  Hopton Parade
  • Number 245 Hopton Parade
  • Number 374 – 380 Hopton Parade
  • Streatham Railway Station, and associated railway track.
  • Bridge Parade - numbers. 1 – 5.

You can view maps of the existing and proposed boundaries.
