Instructions for Candidates

Answer the questions below to apply for the 2021-22 Joseph Rago Memorial Fellowship for Excellence in Journalism. You will not be able to save your work if you leave this page, so review the application before you begin and make sure you have all the requested materials. For more information, click here.

In addition to the application below, we ask candidates to obtain one letter of reference from someone familiar with their work and abilities. The reference letter can be submitted here or emailed to Daniel McCarthy, director of journalism fellowships, at dmccarthy@TFAS.org.

Applications are due by February 15, 2021.

Candidates will be notified whether they have been chosen as finalists by March 31, 2021. Finalists will be interviewed online by web video in early April. The interviews will be conducted by a panel of judges from the Wall Street Journal, the Rago family, and The Fund for American Studies. The fellowship begins in September.

Write and upload an original sample editorial of 500-600 words on an important and timely domestic policy issue, as if you were writing an editorial for the Wall Street Journal itself. This should demonstrate your research skills and ability to write persuasively.
