Proposal Overview
Port Augusta City Council is inviting community feedback on a proposal to install a 700kilowatt and 1,828 kilowatt-hour community battery on Council reserve adjacent to the SA Power Networks (SAPN) electricity substation on Bryant Street/Ellis Close, Port Augusta West.
The proposal forms part of the South Australian Government’s emPowering SA program, which aims to make better use of renewable energy and improve electricity affordability and grid reliability.
The emPowering SA battery fleet will deliver direct benefits to more than 10,000 South Australian government nominated households facing cost of living pressures, through access to a retail electricity rate 26% below the Default Market Offer (DMO), the default price for electricity.
Community batteries store excess energy when renewable energy is abundant and make it available during periods of high demand, at night, or when the electricity grid needs additional support.
As part of a broader Virtual Power Plant (VPP), the community battery aims to help deliver more affordable electricity to eligible households that cannot support their own solar panels or a battery, and improve the stability and resilience of South Australia’s electricity network.
The proposed battery would be owned by the Government of South Australia and maintained and operated by energy retailer AGL as part of the VPP network.
