Eligibility and Criteria for Selection

Honorees may include individuals from legal practice, academia, industry, or other sectors who have shown exceptional, long-term, or impactful support or leadership within IEL. The following criteria should be considered:
  • Sustained Involvement: Demonstrated long-term engagement (minimum of eight years, but recommended longer period of time) with IEL, including membership, leadership roles, faculty participation, committee participation, publication participation, financial support, and other contributions.
  • Influence: Notable impact on IEL through thought leadership, innovation, or service.
  • Support of IEL’s Mission: Tangible support of IEL’s educational and professional mission through time, talent, or resources.
  • Growth and Recruitment: Demonstrated efforts to increase participation in IEL.
  • Recognition and Respect: Broad respect within the energy law community.
  • Significant mentorship or sponsorship of emerging leaders within IEL.
  • Previous awards or honors (internal or external) that underscore the individual’s impact on IEL, the energy industry, or the legal profession.

The number of individuals inducted into the first IEL Legends class shall not exceed 10 individuals.

Induction may occur posthumously.

No person shall be eligible for induction if they currently hold the position of IEL Advisory Board Chair or IEL Advisory Board Senior Vice Chair.
Nominations must be made by October 22, 2025.
Please note that an individual must be nominated by someone else. Self-nominations will not be considered.
