Lewis County Employer Vanpool Survey
Lewis County Public Transportation (LCPT) is conducting a survey to determine the feasibility of providing a pilot vanpool program to employers and commuters in Lewis County and neighboring jurisdictions. LCPT is planning to subsidize a majority of the cost for vanpools in the pilot program. We would like to hear from local employers about the potential for this service.
Many employers have encouraged the creation of vanpools to help employees commute to their job sites. Vanpools are a form of transportation that generally carry 5 to 15 commuters. The vanpool travels roundtrip from an individual's home (or a prearranged meeting place) to the job site. The vanpool driver is a volunteer from within the group using the van for transportation to/from work. Vanpool riders share the cost of its operation by paying a monthly fee. However, employers can also subsidize a portion of each employee riding in a vanpool. Additionally, employees are allowed to have their vanpool fares deducted from their paychecks prior to the payment of gross federal income taxes, reducing the employees tax burden and the employer's federal payroll tax.
