VP Marketing

MJBizDaily, producer of America’s fastest-growing B2B trade-shows as well as the most trusted business news publisher for the cannabis and hemp industries, is seeking a VP Marketing to lead our marketing and creative services teams. Based at our Denver-area HQ, this position reports directly to the President. The marketing department team is responsible for audience development, opt-in readership, paid subscriptions, report sales, and paid registrations to large business events for the US, Canadian and global cannabis and industrial hemp markets., with additional markets and industries potentially on the horizon. In addition, it is responsible for the company’s visual branding, including web, app, email, print presence and event signage.

You will be leading a department with two divisions – the marketing team and the creative services team. 

The marketing team include marketplace and product managers who have significant online conversion and sales goals (as mentioned above). This team also provides basic marketing support services to the sales department who handle our sponsorships and exhibitor sales.

The creative services team handle marketing’s marketing team’s copy, design and production needs, as well as providing digital design, social media and PR support to our separate event content and editorial departments. The creative services team also ensure our overall branding across a wide array of platforms including web sites, landing pages, email newsletters, apps, social media, print magazines, event signage and podcasts.


Your experience and interests should match up well against these duties:

  • Leading marketing across all media channels and platforms online and off. Our offline marketing and brand presence include a print magazine, postal direct mail, PR management and event signage. Our digital presence includes multiple web sites, an app, a podcast, email newsletters, digital magazines, social media feeds and more.
  • Departmental budgeting and online sales goal responsibilities for event registrations, subscriptions and paid content offerings.
  • Hiring, mentoring and guiding teams of marketing and creative services professionals, project managing their efforts to keep on top of multiple campaigns for multiple products all of which are competing for time and attention both internally, and with the audience.
  • Balancing branding with conversion optimization. The team includes an a/b testing expert, an extensive prospect database, and campaign response rates are carefully measured. Understanding, measuring and optimizing each step of the prospect funnel from brand awareness to opt-in reader to first purchase to repeat purchaser.
  • Ensuring marketing partnerships, such as promotional barters, are consistently negotiated and managed across dozens of different partners. Also ensuring our (limited) media buys and PPC campaigns are thriftily selected, optimized and tracked.
  • Persona-based and niche marketplace-focused messaging – creative that begins with the tightly-defined target market’s needs and interests first and foremost. It’s about them, not us.
  • Coordinating closely and transparently with other departments, including IT, sales, events, and product development.
  • Handling the challenges that come with a rapidly evolving market, including a continual stream of new allies, competitors and opportunities, as well as frequent new and revamped product launches. Plus, discerning how strategies must change to suit international markets.
Experience in audience development, event registration marketing and B2B and in international markets is strongly preferred but not required. We do not require experience in our specific marketplace – the right candidate can pick up a market fairly easily with our guidance and data. We are looking for overarching knowledge of the best practices in both digital and offline marketing and great team management chops.
