Dear Potential Participant:

To be fully informed, you must read the entire informational cover letter before accessing the survey link at the end of this letter (This study has been approved by The Institutional Review Board at New Mexico State University - IRB ID #14884/Modification#15213).

Description of Study: The goal of this study is to understand the impact of race-related stress (stress caused by racism) on the physical and mental health, well-being and coping of individuals that self-identify as African American and/or Black American. We are asking participants to take a survey. The survey will take you approximately 35 minutes to complete.  You must be at least 18 years old to participate and self-identify as African American and/or Black American.

Voluntary Participation: Your participation in this research is VOLUNTARY. You are free to stop participating at any point without penalty or loss of any privileges.

Confidentiality: All participant responses will be completely CONFIDENTIAL. You will not be identified in any presentation or publication of this research. Survey information you provide will be combined with the data from other respondents and reported as grouped data.

Potential Benefits: Mental health literature has not thoroughly examined the relationships between race-related stress, health and coping. By participating in this study, you are helping us to develop a better understanding of African Americans/Black Americans experiences with race-related stress, health and coping.

Potential Risks: Psychological risks related to your participation in this survey are unlikely or minimal. These risks include memories or emotions that may be evoked when you answer questions related to sensitive topics or health concerns. Please be reminded that you are free to skip any question or withdraw from participation at any time. If you are feeling significant emotional discomfort you are encouraged to contact the mental health resources listed below.

If you experience any discomfort as a result of participating in this study, please contact/use the following resources:

SAMHSA Treatment Referral Helpline: 877-SAMHSA7 (877-726-4727). Get general information on mental health and locate treatment services in your area.

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 800-273-TALK (800-273-8255). Trained crisis workers are available to talk 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. These centers provide crisis counseling and mental health referrals.

Compensation:
There will be a $15 gift card drawing for every 20 participants that engage in the survey portion of the study. All gift cards will be provided by way of a lottery system/gift card drawing.

Once you exit the survey, you will have the opportunity to participate in the gift card drawing by being linked to a page where you will be instructed to enter your name and email as an entry for the drawing of prizes. The drawing entry of your name and email is separate from the survey. There is no way your name and email for the prize drawing can be linked to your survey responses. If you have won a prize, your name and email will be used to contact you to claim your prize. The names and email addresses of prize-winners will be removed after they have received their gift card.
