1.When communicating with students and families, it is important to remember that this may be the first time that the student is looking at an institution like yours and that parents may be going through the process for the first time.
2.Student centered counseling focuses on the theme of fit and presenting the real voice of the institution you are representing.
3.Communicating your institution’s policies and processes to students and families is equally important as communicating them to the secondary counselors you are working with.
4.When discussing the cost of attendance to your institution, it is important to discuss extraneous costs including bringing your car to campus, buying plane tickets home twice a year and buying books.
5.When talking with students and families about goals and objectives it is important to communicate multiple pathways for students to reach their goals.
6.With technology changing the landscape of the college application process, many secondary counselors are finding it difficult to advise their students on portions of the application as they do not have direct access to online applications without logging into school systems as a student. List ways that postsecondary institutions are working with secondary counselors to combat this problem.
