Draft 2026 Delta Science Plan - Public Comments

Background

Thank you for your interest in contributing to the next Delta Science Plan. By providing feedback on the draft 2026 Delta Science Plan, you will help ensure that the plan accurately reflects the needs of the Delta science community.

The Delta Science Plan is a guidance document that provides the vision, principles, and approaches for coordinating, conducting, and communicating science in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The 2026 iteration of the Delta Science Plan includes 24 actions that are organized around four grand challenges in Delta science—providing a framework that emphasizes persistent system-wide issues. The four grand challenges describe major impediments facing the Delta and, by design, are rooted in multidisciplinary literature and encompass the needs of many organizations. Additionally, each action has an associated example (referred to as “current momentum”) to showcase existing or planned initiatives while encouraging new connections and inspiration for future work.

The four grand challenges outlined in the 2026 Delta Science Plan include:

· Grand Challenge #1 – Scientists and managers must anticipate a world in which environmental conditions and regulatory constraints may be fundamentally different from those faced today.

· Grand Challenge #2 – Environmental change is outpacing the traditional pace of science.

· Grand Challenge #3 – Flows of scientific information remain decentralized and poorly connected to communities and decision makers.

· Grand Challenge #4 – Other ways of knowing, including Traditional Knowledge, remain siloed from decision making.
