Call for Production Team Members, Writers and Actors: University of Utah Gender-Based Violence Consortium

Project Title: Utah Women’s Narratives

Project details: If you are interested in being in the production team, a writer, or an actor, fill out this interest form.

This project of the Gender-Based Violence Consortium will highlight those who identify as women, whether it be in mind, body and/or spirit. The goal is to complicate ‘woman’, gender, and marginalized identities. Therefore, this call honors the stories of transgender women, nonbinary people, women of color, Black women, Indigenous women, and all other women-identifying folks with marginalized identities. Women of all backgrounds and identities are welcome and encouraged to submit their narratives and/or audition. Writers, actors and production team members can be anyone living in Utah. This is not limited to students at the University of Utah or residents within Salt Lake City. Performances and written pieces will be published online (details of publication venue forthcoming).

For inquiring production team members:
Volunteers welcome. Tasks include: editing, producing, and stage directing. Diane Lê Strain and Francesca Hsieh will be co-directors. Lead editors include Diane Lê Strain, Dr. Annie Isabel Fukushima and Dr. Kimberly Jew.

Submission process for writers:
Submit a narrative about living in your gender identity. Accepted submissions will work with editors who will revise accepted pieces into a monologue format. Writers will be involved in the editing process to any extent they would like to be and their voices will be honored, first and foremost, unless writers request anonymity. Writers do not have to perform their own story.

Submission type for writers: submit narrative as a doc or docx
Length: 2,000 words maximum.
Deadline of Submission: January 31, 2021
Submit to: gbvc@utah.edu

Audition process for actors:
Actors will submit recorded auditions and/or examples of their performances. This can be a longer monologue of any genre or form (appx 3 minutes) or videos of past performances. Monologues for auditions can be in the first, second or third person. The structure is open-ended. Monologues will be performed by actors, who can be the respective writers, but do not have to be. For the final production, actors will be recording their monologues in their own homes for the safety of all participants. We will provide a space for actors to record their performances if working in their own homes is not an option. Actors don’t have to submit a written piece in order to be an actor. Actors may perform multiple narratives if appropriate.

Submission type for actors: submit performance as a YouTube link or Vimeo link.
Length: 3 – 7 minutes; multiple examples welcome.
January 31, 2021: Audition submissions due.
