Award Eligibility, Criteria and Nomination Submission
SUBMISSION PERIOD: JANUARY 13, 2025 – FEBRUARY 28, 2025.
ABOUT THE BROMLEY L. ARMSTRONG AWARD
The Bromley L. Armstrong Award recognizes the contributions, commitment and leadership of a union in the fight for, and propagation of, labour and human rights. Toronto & York Region Labour Council and Labour Community Services established this prestigious award in 2005 to commemorate the courage, dedication, and outstanding service of Bromley L. Armstrong to the Labour and Human Rights Movements. Since 2021, the Bromley L. Armstrong Award has been presented annually to a Toronto & York Region Labour Council affiliated union local that has demonstrated excellence in the areas of labour, equity, and human rights. The award selection process is based on activities and contributions of the nominee/s during the previous calendar year. One (1) union will be selected for the award in this category.
ELIGIBILITY
· Nominees must be a member of a union local affiliated to the Toronto & York Region Labour Council.
· The nomination must recognize and outline the activities and contributions that meet or exceed the selection criteria below.
· The nomination must highlight continuous service in the areas of labour and human rights (or service within a significant event in the Labour Movement) that advances labour and human rights.
· The nomination must include two references. (It would be beneficial to have the endorsement of the affiliated union local’s executive.)
· Union locals are allowed to nominate themselves.
· All nomination forms must be received by Labour Community Services between January 13 – February 28, 2025.
Recommendation/s for the award recipient/s will be made by the Toronto & York Region Labour Council’s Equity Committee to the Toronto & York Region Labour Council’s Executive Committee for approval. The Equity Committee or a designate will consult with individuals or unions to seek clarification where necessary. All recommendations must meet the award selection criteria.
AWARD SELECTION CRITERIA
The award recipient will be a union local that:
· exemplifies the spirit, dedication, and ideas of the Labour Movement,
· makes a contribution to labour equity and human rights,
· organizes and educates members on human rights and equity issues,
· helps confront human rights violations,
· provides assistance and support to member who experience harassment and discrimination,
· promotes equity within their union and the wider Labour Movement,
· works to ensure that the employer and the union comply with the provisions under the Ontario Human Rights Code, and
· demonstrates leadership in the Labour Movement and the community.
Nominations should include specific examples of the above criteria when the nominees are presented.
