UNDERGROUND PETROLEUM STORAGE SYSTEMS: ARE YOU UP TO DATE WITH YOUR OBLIGATIONS?

Leaks from underground petroleum storage systems (UPSS) are a major environmental problem and can have impacts that are costly and time consuming to fix.  For these reasons minimum requirements for UPSS construction and operation were introduced in 2008 and are known as the UPSS Regulation.

This self-evaluation has been developed to provide service station operators with a quick and simple way to review their compliance with environmental requirements for UPSS in NSW.

WHY SHOULD YOU PARTICIPATE?
Service station operators who participate in this program are more likely to identify shortcomings and take the necessary actions to correct them, before they develop into major environmental issues. The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and key industry bodies, such as the Australasian Convenience and Petroleum Marketers Association (ACAPMA) and the Motor Traders' Association of NSW - Service Stations Association (MTA NSW - SSA), encourage all service station operators to participate in the program.

The EPA will work with those operators who participate in this self-evaluation program to help bring them into compliance with the requirements.

WHO SHOULD COMPLETE THIS EVALUATION?
This evaluation should be completed by the company or person who has primary responsibility for managing and maintaining the UPSS at a service station (known as the 'person responsible'). In some cases, this can be a person other than the service station operator or owner.

If you have questions regarding this self-evaluation or are not sure if it applies to you, please call the EPA on 131 555 and ask for a UPSS team member or email UPSSREG@epa.nsw.gov.au.

HOW SHOULD THIS EVALUATION BE COMPLETED?
This self-evaluation is a series of short questions.  Please answer all questions to the best of your knowledge.  Please insert additional comments or detail where required. At the end, a list of areas where 'action' may be needed to ensure compliance with the UPSS Regulation will be generated from your answers.

This self-evaluation should take 5 to 15 minutes to complete.

WHAT IF YOU OPERATE MULTIPLE SITES?
If you operate multiple service stations in NSW, you should complete this evaluation for each site.  Alternatively, you could choose the convenient option of completing an Excel spreadsheet, which is designed for easy data entry for multiple sites. This is available from the EPA at UPSSREG@epa.nsw.gov.au
