The Art of Bookmaking (identical content is offered during afternoon session): This is an introduction to the world of artists' books where the book is more than something to be held and read passively. In this workshop we will create pop-ups, flag books and other unconventional book structures that invite interaction and engagement with the object as well as the content. (Cost for this session is $25, which includes a boxed lunch).
Presenter is Guest Speaker Bonnie Thompson Norman, who has been the proprietor of The Windowpane Press for nearly forty years, a letterpress printing and book arts studio, as well as a hand bookbinder in a commercial bindery for about twenty years. On evenings and weekends, Bonnie teaches classes in printing and bookmaking.

We’ll cover the basics and move into action planning for your classroom and library. She lives in Helena, Montana, where she works for the Montana Office of Public Instruction (OPI) as the School Library Specialist. In addition to her day job, Colet has collaborated with Mike Eisenberg and Janet Murray to create the Big6 by the Month webinar series and most recently co-authored The Big6 Curriculum: Comprehensive Information and Communication Technology Literacy for All Students (Libraries Unlimited 2016).

Project Outcome Regional Training Workshop, Part 1: Public library services put people on the path to literacy, technological know-how, or a better job – but what we are often missing is the data to show it. Outcome measurement helps libraries answer the questions: How can we better measure and demonstrate our community impact? What good did our services do?
This workshop will offer a deep-dive into outcome measurement using Project Outcome tools. You will learn how to deploy outcome measures in your library, collect and use resulting data, and leverage the project's support network to ensure successful adoption. Be a part of a cohort of public libraries interested in implementing Project Outcome to drive change, influence decision making, and demonstrate the true impact of their library’s programs and services on the community. (This session is covered by grant funding and includes a boxed lunch.) Please submit your contact information and complete the preconference assignment prior to attending.
Presenter is Guest Speaker Rochelle Logan, MLS, recently retired as Associate Director of Support Services at Douglas County Libraries, Colorado (DCL). She currently serves on the PLA Project Outcome Taskforce where she is helping design, test and implement tools for outcome measurement for libraries across the country. Rochelle is a Project Outcome regional trainer. Rochelle is now a library consultant specializing in data analysis, evaluation and training. She is an instructor for the Research Institute for Public Libraries (RIPL) serving on the planning committee and as a facilitator at the Institute in 2015 and 2016.

Come and learn (or be refreshed) on how to use the OWL video endpoint in your library, how to schedule videoconferences and why you’d want to do such things. After attending this 3-hour session, participants will:

Some call it ‘PowerPoint karaoke’ and all agree it’s hilarious. The audience will enjoy a session of light-hearted fun, with guest judges helping us choose the winner. Prizes for all participants. Attendees will have fun. Attendees will learn something completely unexpected. Attendees might learn that they have a knack for impromptu comedy/speechmaking (or that they don’t…).

Cognitive Bias in Reference and Research: Cognitive Bias is a challenge for both professional and amateur information seekers as they gather information about the world. Biases about which we are unaware change the nature of our searches as well as the ways in which we interpret our results. This session looks at extending the collaborative jam session between librarian and patron that is a reference transaction to control for the cognitive biases of both parties. Learn where in the reference transaction bias can cause the most distortion and where self-examination by both the librarian and patron can yield clearer results.

Creating a Needs-based School Library Budget: Schools face shrinking budgets and therefore school library budgets continue to shrink. And principals who are responsible for making critical budget decisions are making those decisions about the library in an information vacuum. Librarians need to present a needs based budget request yearly. This program will review the steps to creating a needs-based budget proposal based on careful collection development.

Look, Listen, Touch: Connecting With Your Community Through Art:
Learn how you can bring art, music, artists, and tactile programming into your library spaces, or your library into artistic spaces! Featuring a variety of models in use across a range of library types and sizes, this session will give you the tools you need to create a sustainable arts program in, and connection with, your community. Topics include creating community partnerships, developing relationships with artists, marketing your art installations, tips for displaying art, art donation & damage policies, partnership agreements, and art-related programming for all ages. Leave this session inspired to make art happen in your library!

Curiosity Creates Grant, “All Dolled Up”: We will talk about the Curiosity Creates Grant from the ALSC and our program “All Dolled Up”. Our proposal built on the library’s American Girl Sewing Project. “All Dolled Up” was designed to promote creativity and teach valuable skills. The program consisted of a once monthly 2 hour classes. It also included six American Girl Doll kits available for patrons to checkout. We will discuss best practices for implementing this type of programming and sewing classes in particular. We will also touch on the policies we use for lending non-traditional items.

Reading For All: Talking Books Are For More Than the Blind: Although the Talking Book Center is now contracting services with Utah, we’re still managed in-state. This amazing service can be a lifeline not only for the blind, but also for people with visual impairments, with physical disabilities that impact the ability to hold a book, and with some learning disabilities. Every community has someone who can benefit from Talking Books services. Learn how we can work together to ensure that all Alaskans have the opportunity to read.

Between the Sheets (spreadsheets, that is!): A practical discussion of how the spreadsheet can be a useful tool for library data collection, budgeting, reports, and activity planning. We will look at features, common in most spreadsheet programs, that can be useful for working with your library’s data, budget, activities, and reports. We will also talk about ways to troubleshoot common frustrations and problems. The concepts (such as common formulas, populating cells, formatting/printing issues, and graphs) to be discussed will be of interest to the beginning or intermediate spreadsheet user from any type of library.

Coordination and Cooperation for School Library Paraprofessionals: The best library lessons don’t exist in a vacuum. They take what a student has begun to learn in the classroom and makes connections to information literacy, critical thinking, and lifelong learning. Whether you’re a library paraprofessional who works with a librarian or if you’re all on your own, we’ll discuss some ways to work through the challenges of coordinating and cooperating with teachers when there just doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day.

Healthy Aging at the Library: Connecting Older Adults to Health Information: By the year 2030 the number of seniors will be 20% of the U.S. population. These older adults have a wide range of computer abilities as well as health interests. This class is designed to help librarians assist their older adult patrons find reliable health information as well as become engaged in their healthcare. Become acquainted with the free resources of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) to better serve the health information needs of older adults. Learn how to incorporate these NLM resources into your collections, your social media, and your library programming. Caregiver resources will also be included.

Library Discovery in Alaska (OCLC): Alaska libraries have historically worked together to enable discovery and sharing of resources within the state. This has allowed Alaska citizens to find – and get – materials locally or from other Alaska libraries. Cooperation through OCLC’s WorldCat database on FirstSearch/WorldCat Discovery extends discovery to libraries worldwide, in addition to delivering library visibility on popular, non-library websites where people often begin their research.

This program discusses the impact of cooperation on discovery of resources in Alaska libraries. It includes information on the status of changes to FirstSearch and WorldCat Discovery and examples of how some libraries are successfully using FirstSearch and WorldCat Discovery today.

ABCs of DNA: Unraveling the Mystery of Genetics Information for Consumers: Consumers need access to information and resources about genetic information in a manner that is understandable. Librarians working with the public need to be aware of the issues surrounding genetics and resources to assist patrons in locating and evaluating sometimes complex and confusing information. This class offers an overview of genetic health literacy, genetic testing, and the Precision Medicine Initiative. Ethical and legal issues associated with genetics will be covered in regard to its impact on medicine and society. A variety of reliable health information resources from the National Library of Medicine and other government agencies will be reviewed.

ESSA and the School Library: If you haven’t heard the buzz around ESSA and school libraries, it’s time to come out of your cave. The Every Student Succeeds Act will bring opportunities and implications for school library funding and programming. ESSA partially funds most schools in Alaska. We’ll take a look at the ins and outs of this legislation, federal funds, and how you can get involved with the decision-making process at your school.

Libraries Build Communities VISTA Project: The Alaska State Libraries VISTA Project is an innovative project which is focusing on improving the education and economic opportunity of residents in three Prince of Wales communities: Coffman Cove, Craig and Thorne Bay, as well as the Village of Kake, which is located on Kupreanof Island. During this panel session VISTA volunteers, Site Supervisors and the Project Manager will share how this project is improving the effectiveness, services and sustainability of the public library in each of these communities.

The Art of Early Literacy: The Art of Early Literacy is understanding how children learn to read. Early Literacy is what children know about reading before they actually begin to read and write. You will learn the latest research behind the concepts and methods of Early Literacy. You will find out how five simple practices make a world of difference in developing Early Literacy and gain practical advice on how to implement those practices in everyday life. You’ll also find out about free resources that promote Early Literacy. You can help children in your community become strong readers by sharing this valuable information with parents and caregivers.

The Art of Getting a Grant for Your School Library: Do you have a great idea for your library but no money to fund it? The bad news is that you are not alone. The good news is that even in tough economic times there is grant money available to help fund your dream. You just need to know where to find it and how to get it. Dona Helmer, self-professed Donors Choose queen and Can-Do-Kid, has had over 150 grants funded during the past 3 years and will walk you through the process and show you how you can be successful.

PNLA Artistry Shared: The Pacific Northwest Library Association is a regional organization bringing together librarians and library staff from all walks of library life. The organization offers PNLA Leads (a biennial leadership institute), a peer-reviewed online quarterly journal – PNLA Quarterly, and the annual Young Reader’s Choice Award which allows youth in the region to choose the best books in three divisions. Google Forms in the Library: Learn the basics of using Google Forms. Anyone with a Google account can create and use forms in a variety of ways. This session will focus on how to create forms and the many different ways they can be used.

Learn some ways to use Google Forms in a library or classroom
Brainstorm other creative ways to use Google Forms
Create a Google Form

TAGs and Teens: For nearly 10 years the Teen Advisory Group (T.A.G.) has been an active part of Ketchikan’s library experience. T.A.G. has changed greatly as each group of seniors has graduated out and new members come in, but since their start they have steadily been a source of ideas, enthusiasm and industry for the library. Changing and adapting over the years is only one part of having an active teen group, others include viable yet non restricting rules, finding the balance of independent and guided activities. To learn more about the success of the KPL’s T.A.G. and ways to find the same success in your community you are invited to attend this session.

Using Arts and Crafts to Support Close Reading: Younger patrons and ELL’s often struggle with communicating their learning and comprehension through writing or even speaking. By providing a non-language based way of expressing what they learn from a story, we can support intellectual growth and learning by allowing learners to create a product that doesn’t rely solely on written or spoken expression. Art provides an avenue to show that our young learners comprehend a story. We will look at several example programs and create a couple of the art pieces for ourselves.

The session will end with a review of the reports and troubleshooting features available to partner libraries. While this session is intended for Alaska Digital Library partner libraries, everyone is welcome.

Finding & Enhancing Alaskana in the National Archives Catalog: The National Archives Catalog has digitized photos, reports and more regarding all of Alaska from Barrow to Ketchikan. We’ll explore these treasures in a hands-on workshop where you’ll search for material from your town, region or area of Alaskan interest. We’ll also show how you and your patrons can contribute tags, transcriptions and comments to make these Alaska resources still more findable and useful to our fellow citizens. You might be inspired to hold an “Annotate Alaska” party or two in your home community.
